A Poem for Busse Woods

The other day, Ginny and I were riding in Busse Woods.

Busse Woods has 3 major trails … and they have color coded arrows to indicate which way the trails go.

Ginny asked me how she would know what turn to take when she came to a trail intersection … so I came up with the following poem…

Don’t take brown, you’ll just have to turn aroun’

Don’t take black, you’ll just have to turn back.

Just take red and you can go straight ahead.

OK, yeah, I’m easily amused.

Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me – Golden anniversary Edition

This post could also be titled: Why Carl Kasell is the greatest guy in the world!

If it hadn’t been for my mom’s passing last week, this Sunday would be my parents 50th wedding anniversary.

My brother Mitch, the really creative one in the family, pulled out all the stops.  He got a letter from Senator Dick Durbin, a card from Barack & Michell Obama, and to top it all off … he arranged to have Carl Kasell to record a special greeting for the event.

The original plan was to do a “Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me” (WWDTM) format game during the anniversary party (which had been scaled back from a big even to a much smaller affair, for obvious reasons) … and Mitch thought that the only thing missing was Carl Kasell’s intro.  So he sent an email to the producers of WWDTM, explained the situation and asked if it would be possible to get Carl to record a message, and they agreed.

Sentient?

I think most developers I know (and I know quite a few) will identify with this blog post.

Have you ever wondered why something on your computer will work fine while you’re working on it (or developing it) but, suddenly and without warning, fail to work properly when you’re showing someone what you are working on?

This often happens when someone asks you if there’s a way to accomplish something … and you say: “Sure, that’s easy”, and try to show them … failing miserably.

w00tstock Chicago

Last sunday Ginny and I went to w00tstock Chicago at the Park West … it was an incredibly fun time.
W00tstock is the brain child of Wil Wheaton, Paul and Storm, and Adam Savage.   It’s billed as “Three hours of geeks and music”.

Sadly, it wasn’t quite as advertised … the show lasted four and a half hours … and was absolutely laugh out loud funny.

They frequently have local guest stars … and this show had Peter Sagel, Bill Amend, and a few other folks.

XC Skiing

It’s been a very long time since I was on the skis … either lack of good snow, illness, or scheduling problems, have made it hard to get out on the trails.

Today we were able to break that trend … after Ginny was done with church, we went out to Busse Wood Forest Preserve.

With both Ginny and I getting to the health club on a regular basis, we’re in pretty good condition … and it was clearly evident with our skiing.   Neither of us got worn out.

It took me a bit of time to get my rhythm back, but once I did … it was pretty good.

The only down side of this outing was the temperature … it was pretty darn cold.   Well, that’s kind of to be expected with winter sports … but my thumb got so cold it was hurting.

All in all, we did about 2 hours of skiing … and covered about 5 miles.   Not bad for our first time out.

One of these days I want to get back out to Yellowstone in the winter … it’s absolutely beautiful there and next to zero crowds.
