Riley after play

I took this picture of Riley this weekend … I was going for the depth of field with Riley in the background, slightly out of focus, and his cat toys in the foreground.

Came out pretty well, I think. I’m need to play around with that stuff a bit more … but I’m getting better at getting the picture I’ve got in my head.

Auction for Bosses Birthday Card

A rather unique group of developers out in Baltimore have decided to go with a different route to collect money for a birthday card & gift for their boss.

They are running an auction … the winner of this auction will get their name and website signed on the inside of the birthday card in big letters. The card will also be prominently displayed in their office lunch room.

Update: Apparently eBay pulled the auction because they thought it was for a charity … which it was not. The auction has been reposted.

Now I’m a ‘Pod’ people

Yes, it’s true. I’m officially an IPODder.

For reasons I won’t go into, my good friend Steve gave Ginny and I a $500 gift card to ABT Electronics (he’s a VERY good friend).

Today we decided to go over to ABT to see what we could get.

Talk about a madhouse … I thought Frys was crazy, but ABT was insane.

Steve showed us some of his the kitchen appliances he’s getting for the house he’s building … and then left us to make our purchases.

After looking at various items, we decided to get the following …

  • IPOD Nano 4gb for me, including
    • Apple care 2 year warranty
    • Arm band & protective skin
  • Bluetooth headset for Ginny’s cell phone
  • Clock Radio IPOD dock for Ginny

I chose the IPOD because my current MP3 player only has 256mb of memory … and I find it quite frustrating that it runs out of space when I try to put more than a few songs on it.

I wasn’t too thrilled with the size of the nano … but with the skin it’s got enough bulk (and protection) to satisfy me.

Oh yeah … even if you’re not shopping for electronics, I do recommend at least one visit to ABT to see some of their art installations. They have a huge fish tank, a granite globe that floats on water, and this really cool piece that has marbles rolling around tracks. Ginny and I stared at it for about 10 minutes.

Programmer Humor

You can always tell what language a programmer works with by the way they names their kids.

  • COBOL programmers give their kids long hyphenated names … like ANNA-MARIA, MARIE-CLAIRE, or HORATIO-ALOYSIUS.
  • RPG programmers give their kids short names … like BOB, SUE, JOE, or AL.
  • C programmers don’t name their kids … they just point to them.

If you’re not a programmer, you probably won’t get it.

Patch the server

A co-worker (Jon) sent out a email notification indicating that one of our internal server applications would have to be restarted in order to implement a modification … or “Patch”.

Being the smart-ass that I am … I replied …

Me: Man, you have got to get those servers to kick the nicotine habit … they are just not handling the patch that well

Jon: Ya, well the Nicorette kept gooping up the CPU fan, so we had to try something different

Jon’s response almost made me fall out of my chair laughing.

(Yes, I am easily amused)

Dell Discount

I have some Dell discount codes that I’m not going to use.

One is $20 off electronics and accessories purchases of $200 or more.

The other is 20% off select desktop and notebook purchases of $999 or more.

If you would like one of the codes, leave feedback explaining why you deserve the code. I’ll give the code to the person with the best explaination.

They Expire 1/31/06.

Catchup

Oh boy … it’s been a while since I did a serious post here. Time to do some catch up.

  1. My blog feed is now handled through Feedburner. This will allow me to get some stats on my readership. I was quite surprised to see that there are 28 people reading my blog through various mechanims.
  2. The people who are promoting intelligent design are total idiots. The idea that they would want to replace science with religion is total bullshit.
  3. Work has been kind of crazy lately … the project I’ve been working on is in full swing and I’m pretty much heads down on it. I’ll be glad when it’s done … not only will it be a load off my mind … but it will be a very very cool feature. Also, I got a raise today!
  4. Last Saturday, Ginny and I went to see “Beauty and the Beast” by the Highland Park Players … a local community theater group. Our friend Earle was playing Monsieur D’Arque. He only had one significant part, but it was prominent. The show was quite good. Didn’t have the polish that the Marriott Theater production did … but it was fun none the less.
  5. Speaking of theater … we went to see “Footloose” at the Marriott two weeks ago … I was not impressed. The singing was so-so and the dancing was ‘eh’. There were a few good numbers, but as a whole it didn’t work for me.
  6. Riley loves the laser pointer. He also likes lower tech toys like a piece of string. He doesn’t seem to go for the cat toys though.

Well, that’s all the news that’s fit to print right now. I’ll try to keep more current in the future.
